Pest Control

Each unit contains approximately 250 weevils. Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris), also called Goathead, Texas sandbur, or Jamaica feverplant, can be eradicated by weed killers (See Nature's Avenger, Matran EC), but if you have a major infestation in a large area, herbicides are an intensive, expensive option. For treatment of a large area, Puncturevine weevils, available July 1 to September 30th each year, will control this noxious weed. Since the Puncturevine is hardiest in warmer climates, the weevils may overwinter, giving you a head start on the plant next year. How They Work Puncturevine weevils (Microlarinus lareynii and Microlarinus lypriformis) are nature's answer to Puncturevine control. There are two types of weevils mixed in each shipment. The first is an adult seed weevil. The female deposits eggs in the green seed bur and seals them in. The insects hatch and burrow into the green seeds. As they develop, they eat the seed so it cannot sprout. The other weevil is

Milky Spore is a bacterium, Bacillus popillae, which is lethal primarily for Japanese beetle grubs. Once applied, it can remain in the soil for many years. In warm climates, good control of the Japanese beetle can occur in one to three years; in cooler climates, three to five years. The life cycle of the Japanese beetle includes the immature beetle, called a grub. It stays in the soil of your yard and garden, feeding on the roots of your grass and other vegetation. Once Milky Spore is applied, the grubs ingest it as a normal part of their feeding. The more spores are in the area, the greater the chance of infection. Each infected grub dies within approximately 3 weeks and releases new spores. Milky Spore is not affected by freezing or other adverse environmental conditions. Milky Spore is not generally affected by most fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other lawn chemicals. Milky Spore is considered harmless to food crops. It may be used in gardens, around pools and near wells. M

This large weevil lays approximately 100 eggs at the base of older/larger spotted and diffuse knapweed plants. The developing larvae mine the central taproot, damaging the weed's vascular tissue and cause root-gall formation. This root-boring beetle is available on a limited basis this year so get your order in early! How do I get started? Your first goal in starting any biological control program is to identify the areas in which you intend to release your insects. You may already have specific areas in mind where you want to put out your first releases. Perhaps they are areas which are environmentally sensitive and preclude the use of herbicides. They may be areas which are inaccessible for spraying. Or, you may just be fed up with spraying and want to begin biological control in earnest throughout your entire infestation. How many insects are enough for my infestation? One approach is to inundate your infestation with as many releases as is affordable during the first couple years of
